When is the release date?
There is no release date at this time. This project is in it’s earliest conceptual stages; there is no significant funding, no development company or team that has taken it on. It’s success will depend on community interest and involvement to get the ball rolling as it were.
What is different about this game?
That is a very difficult question to answer in a brief FAQ paragraph or two, we’d suggest looking through The Game page which details the various different systems and concepts regarding this project to answer this question.
Will this project be crowdfunded?
Short answer: No. There are no plans to crowdfund this project.
Long(er) answer: MMO projects that are crowdfunded seem to be doomed to fail miserably or drag out development endlessly at the cost of the supporters, which is not something we wish to do.
Our plan would likely involve a phased release of certain parts of the broader game that can still be enjoyed on their own as standalone features (such as The Beneath or Arenas) as a way to showcase working systems and give players enjoyable, tangible gaming experiences while still generating cashflow to sustain the project.
Prices for those first phases would be much less than the completed game, but players choosing to purchase them would then get the full game at no additional cost as more phases were released. This is the only reasonable and morally sound way to release parts of the game in a phased approach in order to stagger the development cycles and distribute costs while generating some funding in our opinion.
Players would only be paying a cost commensurate for the actual ‘game’ they gain access too, but would also have the potential to get the full game release at no further cost as a thank you for supporting the project in it’s earlier phases.
Are you looking for investors or partners?
We are not actively seeking investors at this time or approaching development studios to see if they may want to take on the project.
Once the design is finalized and community surrounding the project is developed, we’ll have a clearer vision of how to proceed to bring the project to fruition and at that point would start looking at technology partners, investors, studios, etc.
How can I get involved?
Can I donate money to this project?
No, we are not accepting monetary donations at this time or crowdfunding the project. You CAN donate your skills and talents to the project however. See the ‘How can I get involved’ entry above!
Is this an open-source project?
Not specifically no. We understand there might be some confusion with the title being ‘Open MMO Project’. But at this point it refers to open-collaboration of the conceptual design of the project and game, not the source code per-say.
That being said, open-source code isn’t out of the realm of possibility, however it brings other implications that are not ideal for this type of project; but that would be a decision made later down the road as development commences.
